TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese tennis star Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) and her Polish partner Jan Zielinski advanced to the round of 16 at the US Open on Thursday (Aug. 29). They defeated Norway's Ulrikke Eikeri and Argentina's Maximo Gonzalez 6-2, 6-3 in the first round.
Hsieh and Zielinski, who won the mixed doubles titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year, aim for their third grand slam title. They also reached the semifinals at the French Open.
In addition to mixed doubles, Hsieh will compete in the women's doubles event with Belgian player Elise Mertens. Their partnership continues to show promise in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese player Chan Hao-ching (詹皓晴) and Russia's Veronika Kudermetova made a remarkable comeback in their women's doubles first-round match. They defeated Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Denmark's Clara Tauson 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, advancing to the round of 32.
However, Wu Fang-hsien (吳芳嫺) and Australia's Olivia Gadecki faced a tough battle in their women's doubles first-round match. After three sets, they failed to advance.
