Wistron still undecided on acquiring AMD

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Wistron (緯創) Chairman Simon Lin (林憲銘) acknowledged Tuesday (Aug. 27) that the company has not yet decided whether to take over the hardware manufacturing business of ZT Systems, which Advanced Micro Devices (AMD, 超微) plans to spin off.

On the same day, AMD announced it would acquire server supplier ZT Systems for US$4.9 billion and plans to spin off the hardware manufacturing business for US$3 billion. Market observers interpret AMD's move as challenging NVIDIA's (輝達) dominance in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, drawing significant attention.

Lin, speaking at the 2024 Taiwan Venture Capital Summit (2024台灣創投年會), revealed that Wistron is aware of AMD's acquisition plan but has yet to form any concrete ideas or decisions.

Meanwhile, Lin expressed confidence in AMD's acquisition of ZT Systems, noting that the $4.9 billion price tag represents just about 2% of AMD's market value, making it a manageable endeavor for the chip giant.

Wistron has recently expanded its operations in California, purchasing a factory to ramp up production. Lin highlighted the ongoing collaboration with Wiwynn (緯穎), Wistron's server manufacturing subsidiary, focusing on enhancing their AI business endeavors.
