WILLIAMSPORT (TVBS News) — Richard Verma, the U.S. deputy secretary of state for management and resources, greeted Taiwanese players at the 2024 Little League World Series on Sunday (Aug. 25). According to a United States Department of State press release, Verma aimed to promote youth sports, cultural integration, and positive social impact.
Alexander Tah-Ray Yui (俞大㵢), the representative to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, and Director-General Lee Chih-Chiang (李志強) of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, also attended to support the Guishan Elementary School Baseball team (龜山國小少棒隊).
The Lamade Stadium in Williamsport was packed with international fans, Taiwanese expatriates across the U.S., and parents who traveled long distances to cheer for their children. The United States will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Regardless of the game's outcome, the event marked a rare and exciting moment for Taiwan-U.S. sports relations. This gathering could pave the way for more significant cultural and sports exchange programs in the future.
