TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Foxconn Technology Group Chairman Young Liu (劉揚偉) addressed gender discrimination allegations against the company on Saturday (Aug. 17), emphasizing the significant contributions of married women to the company's efforts in India.
Liu, attending the inauguration of an employee dormitory in Chennai, the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu, responded to a June report from foreign media accusing Foxconn of excluding married women from assembly-line work due to their perceived greater family responsibilities.
He stated, "Foxconn hires regardless of gender, but women make up a big part of our workforce here. Married women made a great contribution to the company."
Despite admitting to some lapses in its hiring practices at the time, Foxconn issued a statement claiming that it "vigorously refutes allegations of employment discrimination based on marital status, gender, religion or any other form.” The company also informed Indian labor officials that its main iPhone factory in India employs 41,281 people, including 33,360 women. Of these women, approximately 2,750 are married.
In recent years, Foxconn has actively expanded in India, producing iPhones and other smartphone brands. The company plans to venture into AirPods and chip manufacturing. During his visit, Liu met with Indian Prime Minister Modi, and several senior Indian officials to discuss related investment plans.
