TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Olympic badminton gold medalist Lee Yang (李洋) expressed gratitude but also humility on Sunday (Aug. 18) when he spoke about the Taipei City Government's plan to add an honorary name, "Lin-Yang Road" (麟洋路), to Lane 361, Fuxing North Road.

An alumni of Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Junior High School, Lee acknowledged the honor but emphasized the importance of previous players in Taiwanese badminton, stating, "We are not 'that' great; the efforts of our predecessors are also important."

During an event for a Taiwanese functional sportswear brand, Lee highlighted that the success of Taiwanese badminton is not solely due to their two Olympic gold medals. He credited former players and mentors for laying a strong foundation for the sport.

Lee acknowledged the significant contributions of other prominent Taiwanese badminton players. "If Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) had not become the world No. 1, showcasing Taiwanese badminton to the world, and if Chou Tien-chen (周天成) had not been so disciplined in playing excellent matches, we might not have the current Lin-Yang duo," he said. He added that the extensive support team and logistics behind them are crucial to their success.

Lee felt honored but also thought the recognition might be excessive. He also shared his experiences from an eight-day trip to Japan, where he enjoyed his first non-competitive travel.

He shared that many Taiwanese tourists recognized him, adding that he was surprised when fans in a restaurant vied to pay for his meal, though he ultimately paid the bill himself.
