TAIPEI (TVBS News)—Unstable weather conditions will sweep up across Taiwan on Monday (Aug. 19) due to a low-pressure system, with afternoon thunderstorms likely. Jongdari (雲雀), which developed into a tropical storm at 2 a.m., is rapidly moving toward South Korea and is expected to bring heavy rain to the southern region.
According to a Facebook weather report group, the Taiwan Typhoon Forum｜Weather Express (台灣颱風論壇｜天氣特急) reported that the tropical disturbance 98W near Miyako Island (宮古島) intensified into a mild typhoon overnight.
Jongdari is moving north-northeast at 10 kilometers per hour and will not directly impact Taiwan but will bring substantial moisture to the south.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) has warned of unstable weather across Taiwan due to the low-pressure system and abundant moisture from the southwest wind.
Central and southern regions, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, may experience occasional showers or thunderstorms throughout the day, with localized heavy rain and short-duration heavy downpours in the south.
In the north, scattered brief showers are possible, with afternoon thunderstorms and localized heavy rain likely after midday. The CWA advises carrying rain gear when going out.
Additionally, the administration issued a heavy rain advisory for Kaohsiung and Pingtung due to strong convective cloud systems, warning of potential lightning, strong gusts, landslides, falling rocks, and flash floods in mountainous areas, as well as flooding in low-lying areas.
Authorities urge residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during these adverse weather conditions.
