TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) honored Taiwan's Olympic athletes at a celebration on Friday (Aug. 16) held at the Presidential Office. The event recognized not only the athletes but also coaches, medical staff, and administrative personnel, as well as the leadership of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee.
In his opening remarks, President Lai praised the athletes for their remarkable achievements, stating, "Thank you to all the Olympic heroes. With your ambitious sporting spirit, whether you won or not, you are the glory of Taiwan and our nation’s heroes."
Lai expressed his gratitude once more for the athletes' efforts in showcasing Taiwan on the global stage. He emphasized the significance of fostering a sporting culture in schools and families, believing that with adequate government support, young athletes can fulfill their dreams and achieve even greater success in future Olympics.
Vice President Hsiao also congratulated the medalists, saying, "To all the medalists, I am honored to have the opportunity to congratulate you in person." She highlighted the sense of unity and pride that the athletes brought to Taiwan.
Taiwan's Olympic team achieved historic success at the Paris Games, winning two gold and five bronze medals. This performance marked their second-best result ever, following the previous Tokyo Olympics, where the team earned 12 medals.
