TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) highlighted Taiwan's strategic position in the first island chain and stressed the need to maintain a robust defense posture alongside like-minded nations on Wednesday (Aug. 14).
Speaking at a luncheon with Japanese cross-party parliamentarians, Lin emphasized the importance of Taiwan-Japan-U.S. security cooperation.
Lin expressed deep concern for the recent Kyushu earthquake and thanked Prime Minister Fumio Kishida (岸田文雄) for his steadfast support of Taiwan. He noted that this support has strengthened and deepened Taiwan-Japan relations.
The Taiwanese foreign minister pointed out the close ties and cooperation between Taiwan and Japan in trade, culture, and tourism. He underscored their commitment to universal values such as democracy, freedom, and peace.
Lin mentioned Taiwan's challenging diplomatic situation and the need to expand its diplomatic space through diverse means. He cited recent bilateral economic and trade cooperation between Taiwan and Japan, pointing out how Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電), United Microelectronics Corp.(UMC, 聯華電子), and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (力積電, PSMC) all built factories in Japan. Lin also looked forward to future collaborations in high-tech, net-zero transition, and public health.
He called on Japan to support Taiwan's bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and emphasized Taiwan's commitment to mutual assistance and cooperation with allies and like-minded countries when facing various challenges.
