TAINAN (TVBS News) — Officials launched the "Tainan Oysters" (台南蚵) brand mark in Tainan on Wednesday (Aug. 14), marking a significant step for Taiwan's fisheries. Minister of Agriculture Chen Junne-jih (陳駿季) expressed hope that the brand would promote sustainable fisheries in Taiwan.
Minister Chen and Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) witnessed the unveiling of the brand, symbolizing a new chapter in Tainan's 400-year oyster history. The Tainan City Government, Fisheries Agency (漁業署), and Tainan City Fisherman's Association (南市區漁會) collaborated on the brand to promote high-quality, safe oysters nationwide.
Minister Chen noted that the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, 農業部) has invested in improving oyster farming facilities and cold chain equipment in recent years. Chen emphasized that the government has been promoting traceability systems to provide safe and hygienic oysters.
Tainan's oyster farming spans over 1,500 hectares, ranking third nationwide and generating over NT$300 million annually. However, extreme weather and low-cost oyster imports have weakened the industry in recent years.
To address these challenges, the city government has promoted the transformation of traditional oyster farming and market segmentation. The "Tainan Oysters" brand features traceability barcodes on fresh oyster packaging, enhancing product identification and brand value while increasing fishermen's income.
The launch of this brand signifies a promising future for Tainan's oyster industry, advancing sustainable fisheries in Taiwan.
