TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Sports Administration (體育署) announced Friday (Aug. 9) that Taiwan's athletes could receive at least NT$111.6 million in awards, according to the National Glory Sports Medal and Scholarship Awards regulations. This comes as Taiwan's athletes have secured one gold and five bronze medals at the Olympics.
Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) has already advanced to the final in the 57kg boxing category, ensuring at least a silver medal and a chance to win Taiwan's first boxing gold. If she wins gold and opts for a lump-sum payment, she will receive NT$20 million, with her coach receiving NT$5 million. A silver medal would earn her NT$7 million and her coach NT$3 million.
Excluding Lin, the awards will total NT$111.6 million, with NT$96.6 million for athletes and NT$15 million for coaches. Weightlifting star Kuo Hsing-chun (郭婞淳) who won bronze in the 59kg category on Thursday, contributed to Taiwan's six medals so far.
Meanwhile, badminton duo Lee Yang (李洋) and Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟) clinched their second Olympic gold by defeating the Chinese team. If they choose a lump-sum payment, they will receive NT$20 million, or NT$125,000 per month if they opt for monthly payments.
Gymnast Tang Chia-hung (唐嘉鴻), known as "Asia's King of Cats," won a bronze in the horizontal bar event, and is set to receive NT$7.5 million from the "National Glory Awards." Taiwan's impressive performance in Paris highlights the nation's growing prowess in international sports.
