TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) announced on Thursday (Aug. 8) that Taiwan will experience scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon, particularly in the western half, Yilan, and mountainous areas. The agency advised residents to carry rain gear due to the likelihood of heavy rain, lightning, and strong gusts.
Taiwan will see mostly cloudy skies throughout the day. Brief showers are expected in the western half and Yilan from early morning to noon, potentially leading to sudden heavy downpours. Afternoon thunderstorms will be more prevalent in mountainous areas.
Regarding temperatures, highs are expected to reach 33-34 degrees Celsius. Areas like Greater Taipei, central and southern regions near mountains, and the Huadong Valley may see temperatures 1-2 degrees higher due to a lack of sea breeze. Parts of Greater Taipei, Pingtung, and Hualien could also experience temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius. The agency advised outdoor enthusiasts to use sun protection and stay hydrated.
The CWA also reported that a tropical depression southeast of Japan developed into the fifth tropical storm of the year, named Maria, at 2 a.m. Thursday. The storm is moving east-northward and will not affect Taiwan's weather.
