PARIS (TVBS News) — Bojin Chen (陳柏均), a breaker and breaking instructor from Taiwan, is heading the breakdancing event at this year's Olympic Games. The event will make its Olympic debut on Friday (Aug. 9), marking a significant milestone for street dance culture.
Chen, who described himself as a "troublesome" student in his youth, discovered his passion for dance at 11 after receiving a mixtape titled "Jump" from his father. He joined his high school dance club and dedicated all his energy to dancing.
At 17, Chen founded the HRC dance crew and established the HRC Dance Studio in Taipei. He has judged, taught, and led his team to compete in over 50 countries worldwide. Chen has tirelessly promoted breakdancing by giving lectures at high schools and universities and voluntarily teaching hip-hop to children in underdeveloped countries.
"I don't want any other kids who like to dance to be unsupported, so I want to do this better," he said.
In 2020, breakdancing officially became an Olympic sport. Chen said this year is extraordinary for all street dancers and expressed his heartfelt satisfaction in seeing street culture reach the Olympic stage. In 2022, the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) appointed him a Presidium member, responsible for setting competition rules and selecting judges.
Chen believes the Olympic debut of breakdancing will offer the world a unique experience. He emphasized that this is only the beginning, with upcoming events like the World Games, Asian Games, and Youth Olympic Games also featuring breakdancing.
