PARIS (TVBS News) — Taiwanese boxer Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀), 26, clinched a bronze medal in the women's 60kg category on Sunday (Aug. 4), marking Taiwan's second medal at the Paris Olympics. Wu's achievement follows her earlier defeat to China's Yang Wenlu (楊文璐) in the semifinals, echoing her loss at last year's Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Wu, currently studying at the National Taiwan Sport University, began boxing in junior high school and has endured a challenging journey to become a national athlete.
Reflecting on her recent match, Wu expressed, "I'm still a little upset, but I'm going to keep trying to strengthen myself."
In 2019, Wu secured a silver medal at the Asian Amateur Boxing Championships. She advanced to the round of 16 at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which significantly bolstered her international experience. Last year, she also earned a bronze medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Wu's family, who runs a chicken soup noodle shop, has been her pillar of support. Throughout the Olympics, her parents frequently messaged her to soothe her nerves.
Initially, Wu's family opposed her boxing due to the injuries she sustained and her lackluster performance. Despite their concerns, Wu persevered, leading to her breakthrough at the Olympics in Paris this year.
Wu's determination and resilience have paid off, and her journey serves as an inspiration. As she continues to strive for excellence, fans eagerly anticipate her future achievements.
