PARIS (TVBS News) — Taiwanese boxer Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀) secured a victory against María José Palacios from Ecuador in the women's lightweight boxing quarterfinals at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on Wednesday (July 31), ensuring Taiwan's first medal in the Games.
Wu advanced to the quarterfinals after her previous opponent was suspended. In the match late Wednesday night, Wu and Palacios adopted a cautious approach in the first round, with Palacios leading 3-2. However, Wu's aggressive backhand punches gradually helped her gain momentum.
In the second round, Wu leveraged her reach advantage and landed effective combinations, securing a 5-0 lead despite Palacios' frequent clinches. The final round saw Palacios attacking aggressively, but Wu's overall performance earned her a 4-1 victory.
With no bronze medal match in Olympic boxing, Wu's triumph against María José Palacios guarantees a podium finish for Taiwan's delegation. Wu will face China's Yang Wenlu (楊文璐) in the semifinals on Saturday (Aug. 3) at 11:38 p.m.
