PARIS (TVBS News) — Taiwanese boxer Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀) advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women's 60 kg category at the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on Monday (July 29). Wu's advancement came after her opponent, Nigeria's Cynthia Ogunsemilore, failed a drug test and missed the weigh-in.
Wu will face Ecuadorian boxer María José Palacios on July 31 for a semifinal spot. Palacios, 25, who stands at 170 cm, won a bronze medal at the Pan American Games last year and defeated Australia's Tyla McDonald 5-0 in the round of 16.
Wu's journey to Paris was marked by overcoming a shoulder injury and changing her coaching team. She secured her Olympic spot after winning a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year. Wu triumphed over South Korea's Oh Yeon-ji in her opening match in Paris, a two-time World Championships bronze medalist and 2018 Asian Games gold medalist, with a 5-0 victory.
Wu's quarterfinal match on July 31 is crucial. A win will guarantee her at least a bronze medal, as boxing does not hold separate bronze medal matches. Wu's performance on July 31 will determine whether she secures a podium finish.
