TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Executive Yuan (行政院) responded to former U.S. National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien's defense spending comment on Thursday (July 18), stating Taiwan will continue to monitor various suggestions and propose pragmatic plans based on specific defense needs.
The government emphasized its commitment to strengthening defense forces and collaborating with democratic nations to maintain regional peace and stability.
Former U.S. National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien urged Taiwan to increase its defense spending to 5% of its GDP to keep pace with China. O'Brien, who served under former President Donald Trump, recommended bolstering Taiwan's defense capabilities.
In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Trump suggested that Taiwan should pay the U.S. for protection. When asked if he would defend Taiwan against a Chinese invasion, Trump reiterated that Taiwan should financially contribute to its defense.
Government spokesman Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance Taiwan's defense budget, reinstate mandatory military service, and build societal resilience.
Chen noted that future defense budgets will be pragmatically planned based on concrete defense needs. He stressed that Taiwan will continue strengthening its defense forces and enhancing cooperation with democratic countries to uphold regional peace and stability.
As Taiwan navigates these complex geopolitical waters, the government's commitment to defense and international cooperation remains a focal point.
