TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) welcomed an Irish Senate delegation on Wednesday (July 17) to discuss future cooperation between Taiwan and Ireland. Chiang expressed gratitude for the Irish Senate's support on Taiwan-related issues and emphasized the importance of working together for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The delegation, invited by the government, included Diarmuid Wilson, vice chair of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, and Senators Gerard Craughwell, Gerry Horkan, Sharon Keogan, and Garret Ahearn. Chiang, accompanied by cross-party legislators, received the delegation at the Legislative Yuan.
Chiang noted the similarities between Ireland and Taiwan, highlighting their island geography, reliance on trade, and high happiness indexes. He welcomed the delegation as the first Irish group to visit the newly formed 11th Legislative Yuan since its establishment on February 1. Chiang hoped the delegation would enjoy Taiwan's cuisine and culture during their stay.
Chiang praised Ireland's high per capita income, attributing it to the nation's competitiveness, which Taiwan aspires to achieve. He cited the recent world competitiveness ranking by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), where Taiwan placed eighth, and expressed optimism about future collaborations in trade, science, and biotechnology.
Wilson stated that the visit aims to strengthen the economic, cultural, educational, and tourism exchanges between Ireland and Taiwan. He also expressed hope for the re-establishment of the Irish Trade Office in Taiwan and affirmed ongoing support from the Irish Senate, anticipating substantial progress in Taiwan-Ireland relations in the coming months.
