TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) announced Monday (July 8) that a cold-core low is passing through Taiwan, causing atmospheric instability and potentially severe thunderstorms in the afternoon. The phenomenon, common in summer and autumn, occurs at altitudes above 5 kilometers, with the most noticeable effects around 10 kilometers.
As the cold-core low approaches, it lowers high-altitude temperatures, increasing the temperature difference from the ground to the sky. This change enhances convection, often leading to more intense afternoon thunderstorms and possibly hail.
Although the morning remains hot and sunny, the CWB advises caution after noon, especially for mountainous areas near rivers. The bureau has issued high-temperature alerts for Taipei (台北市), New Taipei (新北市), Changhua (彰化縣), Yunlin (雲林縣), Chiayi City (嘉義市), Chiayi County (嘉義縣), Tainan (台南市), Kaohsiung (高雄市), Pingtung (屏東縣), and Hualien (花蓮縣), indicating a likelihood of three consecutive days with temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius.
The CWB emphasizes the importance of safety and preparedness during this period of weather volatility. Residents should stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to mitigate risks associated with severe weather conditions.
