NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City's Transportation Department on Thursday (July 4) responded to inquiries about installing sunshades at YouBike rental stations, stating that the current setup leverages natural tree shade to mitigate heat, making additional sunshades unnecessary.
A Taipei City Councilor noted that YouBike seats can reach temperatures of up to 71°C under direct sunlight, thus suggesting the addition of sunshades similar to those at bus stops. However, Taipei's Transportation Department expressed concerns that sunshades might interfere with charging.
New Taipei City's Transportation Department explained that YouBike 2.0 stations no longer require connections to Taiwan Power Company. This change has reduced construction time and increased flexibility in utilizing irregular spaces, enhancing user convenience. Stations are primarily located in open areas such as roadsides, sidewalks, and under overpasses.
The department emphasized that installing sunshades would complicate construction, extend project timelines, and limit flexible space usage. Additionally, officials highlighted that YouBike 2.0 vehicles are equipped with solar panels for charging, and the poles also use solar power for nighttime lighting, meaning sunshades could hinder these functions.
As the debate continues, the Transportation Department will need to balance user comfort with the practicalities of maintaining an efficient and flexible bike-sharing system.
