TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Ukraine-born Taiwanese entertainer Larisa Bakurova (瑞莎) announced the second year of the "Rising Star RG competition" (瑞星盃韻律體操國際邀請賽) on Wednesday (July 3). She raised NT$3 million to fund the event, but the ongoing war in her homeland brought her to tears during the press conference.
Larisa explained that her uncle volunteered to fight in Ukraine two months ago, causing significant worry for her grandmother, who lives alone. Larisa, whose parents reside in Taiwan, plans to visit her family in Ukraine in September. She expressed concern, stating, "I hope the war ends soon. Many people have lost their legs or arms; it seems to worsen."
She highlighted the severe impact of the war, noting that many people have suffered severe injuries. "The situation seems to be getting worse," she said. Despite the challenges, Larisa remains dedicated to rhythmic gymnastics. Due to limited funds, 50 young athletes practice in nearly 40-degree temperatures, training six days a week under her guidance.
Larisa's commitment to her sport and homeland underscores her resilience and determination.
