NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City's Labor Affairs Department reported a significant rise in sexual harassment complaints, with 27 cases filed between March 8 and the end of June, compared to eight cases during the same period last year. Bureau Director Chen Jui-chia (陳瑞嘉) on Tuesday (July 3) attributed this increase to heightened awareness from the #MeToo movement and recent legal amendments.
Chen noted that the public's understanding of sexual harassment prevention has dramatically improved in recent years, thanks to the #MeToo movement and legislative changes. The Labor Affairs Department has also actively promoted awareness and provided resources to victims.
The Labor Affairs Department has bolstered its team by adding dedicated personnel to handle sexual harassment cases. It offers up to NT$290,000 in financial assistance for victims who pursue legal action. Additionally, it provides up to four psychological counseling sessions, each capped at NT$2,000.
Currently, the Labor Affairs Department employs four dedicated staff members for these cases and seven others who handle both sexual harassment and other gender equality issues, such as employment discrimination.
The Labor Affairs Department explained that the rise in complaints stems from a new law allowing victims to file complaints directly with local governments, bypassing internal company procedures. This change empowers victims dissatisfied with their employer's investigation or disciplinary actions to seek further recourse.
