TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Chinese coast guard vessels detained a Taiwanese fishing boat, "Da-Jin-Man 88" (大進滿88號), on Tuesday (July 2) evening near Kinmen (金門). Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA, 海巡署), under the Ocean Affairs Council, attempted a rescue but failed.
The incident occurred during China's summer fishing moratorium. At 8:14 p.m., the CGA dispatched vessels upon receiving the report. However, the Chinese Coast Guard had already taken the Taiwanese boat to China's Port of Weitou (圍頭港).
At 9:14 p.m., Chinese ships blocked the Taiwanese rescue vessel 10081. The Chinese coast guard broadcasted warnings not to interfere. The CGA reported that the Chinese side engaged in a 50-minute standoff.
The CGA plans to coordinate with the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) and the Fisheries Agency (漁業署) to negotiate the release of the boat and its crew. They urged against politicizing the incident and harming cross-strait relations.
