TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) affirmed on Tuesday (July 2) that the Republic of China (R.O.C.) (中華民國) is a sovereign and independent nation. This statement came during a legislative session where he faced inquiries about his administration's policy direction.
During the session, Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) Legislator Lo Ming-tsai (羅明才) raised concerns about geopolitical issues worrying many, including American and European businesses. He questioned whether Premier Cho would push for Taiwan's independence during his tenure.
In response, Premier Cho pointed out that the R.O.C. is already a sovereign and independent country. He emphasized that the government's primary task is to maintain the status quo of sovereignty and achieve peaceful development between the Indo-Pacific region and both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Legislator Lo further probed Taiwan's readiness for the potential impact of the U.S. presidential election on Taiwan's economy, given its susceptibility to external influences. He asked whether Taiwan was prepared for the potential re-election of former President Donald Trump or the continuation of President Joe Biden's economic philosophy.
Premier Cho responded by stressing the U.S.'s mature democratic system with its election norms and procedures. He noted that Taiwan, as a democratic nation, does not wish for other countries to interfere in its elections. He expressed hope for a smooth U.S. election that would elect the president most supported by the American people, who could play a more peaceful role and contribute to the world.
