TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan remains under the influence of the Pacific high pressure on Thursday (June 27). Weather throughout the island is largely clear to partly cloudy, with sporadic showers or thunderstorms only in the southeast and the Hengchun Peninsula. Afternoon thunderstorms may occur in the central region and other mountainous areas, with a chance of heavy rainfall in the northern mountainous regions.

Daytime temperatures in the eastern half of the island are expected to range from 32 to 34 degrees Celsius. The western half could reach around 36 degrees, with temperatures near mountains, valleys, and the Greater Taipei basin possibly hitting 37 degrees. People engaging in outdoor activities should take precautions against the sun and stay hydrated to prevent heat injuries.

According to Dr. Lin Te-en (林得恩) of the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Taiwan University, the temperature in the Cijin District, Kaohsiung City (高雄旗津) soared to 39.8 degrees Celsius the previous morning. Neipu Township in Pingtung County (屏東內埔) closely followed with a high of 38.4 degrees. Other cities and counties, including Taipei, New Taipei, Taichung, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, and Taitung, also recorded temperatures above 36 degrees.

The weather pattern will continue for the next week. From Thursday to next Wednesday (July 3), the weather will remain mostly clear. Daytime sunlight will contribute to extreme high temperatures, often reaching 36 to 38 degrees, and possibly even higher.

Meteorologists warn that convective developments may occur in the mountains during the afternoons throughout the upcoming week, with the affected areas on the plains expected to expand. People should be aware of the threat of severe thunderstorms and the risk of flash floods on the plains. In the mountains, vigilance is advised for potential landslides, falling rocks, and mudslides.
