TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported an increase in influenza-like emergency visits on Wednesday, indicating the onset of the flu season with H1N1 as the predominant strain. Since the start of the 2023-2024 flu season through June 24, Taiwan has recorded 1,144 severe flu cases, resulting in 214 deaths, with high numbers persisting in severe cases and hospitalizations.
In response, the CDC has broadened access to publicly funded antiviral drugs, now available to anyone exhibiting flu symptoms who has been in close contact with confirmed cases. This policy adjustment, effective immediately, extends through July 31. Taiwan supports this initiative with approximately 4,000 contracted medical facilities nationwide that dispense medications such as Tamiflu and Relenza.
As flu season may overlap with COVID-19 outbreaks, the public is urged to seek medical attention for flu-like symptoms promptly. Physicians will determine the eligibility for publicly-funded drugs based on clinical assessments, bypassing the need for rapid flu tests to expedite treatment. The CDC has emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and proper health practices to mitigate the flu's spread.
