TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorological expert Wu Derong (吳德榮) highlighted on Tuesday (June 25) an unusual pattern of daily thunderstorms over the past week, a phenomenon not commonly observed in recent years.

Wu explained that simulations from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) suggest a stationary front will remain over South China and the Yangtze River (長江) basin until next Monday (July 1).

Taiwan is currently under a Pacific high-pressure system, causing clear skies and high temperatures, often reaching 36 to 38 degrees Celsius. Residents are advised to guard against sunburn, heatstroke, and related injuries.

Wu forecasts that Taiwan will stay on the western fringe of the Pacific high-pressure system for the coming week. This will increase the likelihood of afternoon convective activity near the mountains, which may spread to adjacent flatlands and mountainous regions, potentially causing local showers or thunderstorms.

Residents should be cautious of thunderstorm-related hazards, including lightning, strong winds, and sudden heavy rain, with specific warnings for flash floods in flat areas and landslides or mudslides in mountainous zones.
