TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te announced on Wednesday (June 19) plans to form three presidential committees targeting climate change, healthcare, and national defense.
Noting 2023 as Taiwan's hottest year on record, he highlighted global cooperation in tackling climate issues, with Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun, Academia Sinica President James C. Liao, and Pegatron CEO Tung Tzu-hsien serving as deputy convenors.
Another committee will enhance Taiwan's disaster response, led by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and other top officials. President Lai emphasized Taiwan's role in regional stability and self-defense, which is vital for disaster resilience.
The third committee, focusing on health challenges post-pandemic, will be spearheaded by leaders in biotechnology and public health. It aims to extend Taiwanese life spans and improve health outcomes.
Lai noted that these initiatives reflect a partnership between government, industry, and academia, with quarterly meetings to develop effective strategies for Taiwan and beyond.
