TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned Taiwanese citizens Tuesday (June 11) about the risks of violating local laws in Dubai, including entering inappropriate venues and misunderstanding the emirate's strict alcohol regulations. Department of West Asian and African Affairs Director-General Anthony Ho (賀忠義) highlighted recent incidents where Taiwanese nationals were detained, arrested, and even deported by Dubai police for such violations.

Understanding Local Laws

Director-General Ho emphasized the importance of adhering to Dubai's legal requirements, stating that all alcohol vendors in Dubai must possess an Alcohol License. Consumers must be at least 21 years old and can only consume alcohol in licensed restaurants and shops. He further clarified that consuming alcohol in public places or in establishments without a liquor license, especially in escort or special trade venues, is considered a serious crime.

Seeking Assistance Abroad
Ho also reminded Taiwanese travelers that in case of emergencies abroad, they could seek immediate help by contacting the nearest Taiwanese diplomatic mission or calling the Ministry's emergency hotline (0800-085-095). The Ministry reiterated its call for citizens to respect local customs and laws while traveling, to avoid facing legal consequences.

This advisory comes as direct flights have made Dubai a popular destination for short-term business trips and tourism among Taiwanese citizens. The Ministry's warning aims to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety and well-being of its nationals abroad.
