TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a recent joint statement, China and Pakistan declared the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 "beyond doubt and challenge," reaffirming their commitment to the "One China" principle and labeling Taiwan as an inseparable part of the People's Republic of China (中華人民共和國). This declaration came during Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's visit to China from June 6 to 8, sparking a stern response from Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Taiwan's Firm Stance

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs countered on Monday (June 10), clarifying that Resolution 2758 only addresses China's representation within the United Nations and does not mention Taiwan, nor does it authorize the People's Republic of China to represent Taiwan in the UN system. The ministry condemned the "false statements" from China and Pakistan, emphasizing that the Republic of China (Taiwan) (中華民國台灣) is a free and democratic country, independent of authoritarian China, a fact recognized internationally and reflective of the current status across the Taiwan Strait.

Defending Democracy and Sovereignty

The ministry further criticized China's deliberate misinterpretation of UN historical documents and its absurd linkage to the so-called "One China" principle, which is not a global consensus. It protested against the undermining of the Republic of China's sovereign status by China and Pakistan, vowing to continue strengthening ties with like-minded partners. Taiwan remains committed to defending democracy and freedom worldwide, countering China's coercion, and ensuring peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and global economic security.

Taiwan's resolve to uphold its democratic values against political and diplomatic pressure from China underscores its role as a key bastion in safeguarding the world's democratic and free systems. The island nation's efforts to bolster cooperation with allies against authoritarian expansion signal a commitment to maintaining regional peace.
