TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan released its 2024 White Paper on Thursday (June 6), urging the government to maintain stability and transparency in electricity pricing. The report warns that sudden increases in electricity prices could negatively impact business operations and growth.
Electricity Pricing Concerns
To foster better communication and diverse opinions on electricity pricing, the report suggests involving international businesses in Taiwan through the electricity price review committee or business consultation platforms.
Government and Economic Perspectives
Minister of Economic Affairs J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) expressed a day before at the Legislative Yuan that he does not support the continuous subsidization of the Taiwan Power Company (Taipower). He believes that electricity prices should reflect actual costs and that Taipower should become self-reliant.
Kuo's stance aligns with the principle that electricity prices should mirror the costs involved, indicating a move towards more transparent and cost-reflective pricing.
The American Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan's call for stable and transparent electricity pricing and the government's stance on reducing subsidies suggests a pivotal moment for Taiwan's energy sector. As discussions continue, balancing business needs and economic realities will be crucial in shaping Taiwan's electricity pricing strategy.
