TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) expressed his gratitude to NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang (黃仁勳) for donating the first supercomputer to Taiwan and to TSMC for covering its annual operational costs in a ceremony held Tuesday (June 4).

During the COMPUTEX Taipei event, he announced the government's plans to establish Taiwan's own data center and supercomputer, marking a significant step towards enhancing the island's technological infrastructure.

The announcement came at the opening of COMPUTEX Taipei, an event that has garnered exceptional attention this year due to speeches from tech industry heavyweights, including Jensen Huang and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) CEO Lisa Su (蘇姿丰).

President Lai welcomed guests from around the world and acknowledged the efforts of the tech community and co-organizers, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council and the Taipei Computer Association.

He highlighted COMPUTEX as a crucial platform for showcasing the strength of the technology industry, adding that this year's event was the largest ever, attracting over 30 countries, 4,500 booths, and 1,500 companies.

President Lai emphasized the importance of comprehensive digitalization and the revolutionary development of artificial intelligence (AI) for Taiwan, positioning the island as a central hub in the AI revolution.

He outlined the government's commitment to three fundamental tasks: ensuring stable power supply, establishing data centers, and setting up supercomputers, thanking Huang and TSMC for their support.

Furthermore, Lai's vision extends to making Taiwan an "AI island" by continuing to nurture talent in ICT, semiconductor manufacturing, and AI, urging the business sector to invest in Taiwan to promote AI industrialization, innovation, and the AI transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises, ultimately improving the lives of the people.

This initiative not only aims to bolster Taiwan's position in the global tech arena but also seeks to enhance the quality of life for its citizens through technological advancement.
