TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署, CWA) reported on Monday (June 3) that a frontal system located over the Bashi Channel has brought cooler weather to northern and northeastern Taiwan.

The shift to drier air following the front has significantly reduced rainfall across the island. While sporadic showers are still expected in the south, Hualien, Taitung, and mountainous regions, areas like Penghu (澎湖), Kinmen (金門), and Matsu (馬祖) will see brief showers turning to mostly cloudy skies.

Weather and Temperature Insights

The CWA detailed that early morning temperatures in the western half of Taiwan and the Hualien-Taitung area ranged from 20 to 23 degrees Celsius, with Taitung experiencing a warmer 25 degrees. Daytime highs in the north, northeast, and eastern parts of Taiwan are expected to hover between 25 to 27 degrees, while the rest of the island will feel warmer, with temperatures reaching 28 to 31 degrees.

The administration also warned of strong gusts along the coast from Yunlin (雲林) northward and in areas like the Hengchun Peninsula, Green Island, Orchid Island, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, advising caution during seaside activities.

Air Quality Concerns

The Ministry of Environment (環境部) has indicated that the frontal system's southward movement to the Bashi Channel and the prevailing northeastern winds could bring trace amounts of foreign pollutants to northern and coastal areas. This could slightly increase pollutant accumulation in central and southern regions, which are downwind. Air quality in northern, central, southern, and eastern Taiwan, including Penghu, is rated as "moderate." However, Matsu and Kinmen are under an "orange alert" due to poorer air quality.

As the weather system continues to influence Taiwan, residents are advised to stay updated on weather and air quality reports, especially those planning outdoor activities or with respiratory concerns.
