TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kevin Tai, a Taiwanese-Paraguayan model fluent in Taiwanese Hokkien, recently discussed his deep connection to his Taiwanese heritage in an exclusive interview with TVBS. Raised in Brazil, Kevin maintained a strong bond with Taiwan, often reflecting on his time with his Taiwanese grandparents. In 2019, he relocated to Taiwan, immersing himself in his grandparents' past to keep their memories alive.
Kevin recounted his initial culture shock in 2012. "Surprisingly, at the time, my culture shock was because here in the North of Taiwan, you cannot find a lot of people that speak Taiwanese. At that time, I could only speak Taiwanese," he said. He noted that the primary cultural difference he still experiences is in greetings, comparing the warmth of Brazilians with the reserved nature of Taiwanese people.
In 2023, Kevin achieved third runner-up in the Mister Global competition, marking Taiwan's best performance to date. Despite criticism from some who questioned his Taiwanese roots, Kevin robustly defended his identity, expressing his profound love for Taiwan in fluent Taiwanese. He describes himself as a "citizen of the world," with roots in Brazil, Paraguay, and Taiwan, deeply influenced by his grandparents.
After completing military service and obtaining Taiwanese citizenship, Kevin will emcee the State Banquet after the presidential inauguration. He fondly recalled preparing for the banquet, interacting with officials, and enjoying Tainan's culinary delights, known as the "capital of Taiwanese flavor." Kevin is also committed to raising Taiwan's profile in Latin America and globally, recognizing the importance of his multicultural background in promoting Taiwan. "It's a very important task for me to make people know that Taiwan is a wonderful place," Kevin stated.
