TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Vice President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) addressed the global community Wednesday (May 15) through a video speech at the Copenhagen Democracy Summit, hosted by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation. They emphasized Taiwan's commitment to peace and democracy amid rising tensions with China.

Lai, who is set to be sworn in as the next Taiwanese President, outlined a peace policy based on four pillars to safeguard regional stability.

He stressed the importance of not repeating the mistakes seen in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. "The free world must not succumb to the expansion of authoritarian states," Lai said, highlighting the need to bolster freedom, democracy, economic strength, and resilience.

Furthermore, Lai did not rule out the possibility of engaging in dialogue with China, provided it is based on mutual respect, reciprocity, and dignity without preconditions. He underscored Taiwan's role at the forefront of resisting authoritarian expansion and vowed to continue defending global democratic values while maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.

Meanwhile, President Tsai Ing-wen pointed out China's attempts to intimidate the Taiwanese people through cyber attacks, hacking, and military incursions. However, she affirmed that such actions have only strengthened Taiwan's resolve to defend its democratic freedoms.

Tsai also mentioned the government's efforts to enhance national defense capabilities and collaborate with allies and global partners to ensure regional security and stability. "Any threats or coercion will not shake Taiwan's determination to engage with the world," Tsai declared.

Under Lai's leadership, Tsai is confident that the Taiwanese government and its people will continue to strive to advance democracy and freedom worldwide. This commitment positions Taiwan as a pivotal player in the global fight against authoritarianism, signaling a future of continued advocacy for democratic values internationally.
