TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Wang Kuan-hung stole the spotlight at the 2024 National Intercollegiate Athletic Games (NIAG) Swimming Competition in Taichung on Monday (May 6), clinching a gold medal in the men's 200-meter butterfly with a time of 1:58.23.

In the morning qualifiers, Wang performed impressively, clocking 27.04 seconds for the first 50 meters, 58.37 seconds for the 100 meters, and 2:04.92 overall, securing his place in the finals.

The final race began at 4:30 p.m., with Wang immediately taking the lead with a sharp 0.61-second start and completing the first 50 meters in 25.91 seconds. He was the only swimmer to finish under two minutes, clocking in at 1:58.23.

Previously ranked 16th in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Wang now holds the best record in Taiwan for the event. Under the guidance of his coach, Huang Chih-yung, he has refined his techniques and pace in preparation for the Paris Olympics.

Following the NIAG, Wang will compete in three Circuit of Mare Nostrum Swim Tour events in Europe as part of his Olympic prep.
