TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Dali Yang, a political scientist and sinologist, provided insights into his newly published book, "Wuhan," shedding light on China's early response to the COVID -19 outbreak with TVBS commentator Wenchi Yu on April 16.
Yang highlighted the seriousness of the situation, stating, "Their initial response at the end of December was serious and urgent. However, afterwards, various mistakes ensued step by step."
Yang attributed many errors in judgment by Chinese authorities to systemic reasons, stating, "Central directives instruct local governments to lead disease control efforts, while local authorities await further instructions." He emphasized the importance of transparency, noting that if there were relatively more open and transparent media in China, China's response would undoubtedly be more effective.
Reflecting on the pandemic's impact, Yang noted that the failed emergency response to the COVID pandemic has damaged China’s international image and impacted its diplomacy, but Chinese authorities would still maintain their combative style of "Wolf Warrior" diplomacy.
Yang explained that domestic factors increasingly influence China's diplomatic approach. He explained, "When Chinese diplomats speak, they pay particular attention to the perception of the domestic audience, striving to please and satisfy the public. Consequently, they often deflect responsibility outward."
Looking ahead, Yang hopes his book will catalyze reforms within China's public health system and promote transparency to prevent future health crises.
The Covid pandemic is not just a public health issue but also a matter of political decision-making. Through his detailed analysis, Yang aims to inform and inspire positive change within China's governance and public health sectors.
