TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Acting Minister of Agriculture Chen Junne-jih announced Wednesday (April 17) that the 2.2 million expired eggs left will be destroyed by April 19.

The Ministry of Agriculture's destruction process and costs of imported eggs last year, have been under scrutiny.

Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Yang Chiung-ying stated that two resolutions were reached in the meeting held today, with the first being that video records of the destruction process will be fully disclosed on the Ministry of Agriculture's website by the end of April.

Second, the destruction of 55.8 million imported eggs from countries including Turkey and Australia will be accelerated.

Yang emphasized that the government has demanded the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) provide the simplest SOP process to help businesses upgrade chicken coops by the end of April to avoid any egg shortage.

KMT legislator Su Ching-chuan also stressed that reliance on imports must end, and the issue of chicken breeding needs to be resolved.

Chen stated that the National Animal Industry Foundation (NAIF) will handle the disposal of expired eggs, with the Ministry of Agriculture staff or third parties such as the Ministry of Environment and the National Taxation Bureau of Taipei (NTBT) confirming the process. This will ensure the safe destruction of imported eggs through logistics and personnel management.

Chen pointed out that the costs of storage and other expenses related to the disposal of expired eggs will be calculated after the disposal process is completed.

The costs will be provided to the Legislative Yuan's Economics Committee and published on the Ministry of Agriculture's website. Despite room for administrative review during the process, the decision to import eggs still served to stabilize egg prices.
