TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's President-elect and Democratic Progressive Party Chairman, Lai Ching-te, pledged on Wednesday (April 10) to continue strengthening the robust and close relationship between Taiwan and the United States. He also expressed hope for ongoing U.S. support for a free and democratic Taiwan.
Lai's remarks came during a meeting of the party's Central Standing Committee on the 45th anniversary of the enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act.
Lai stated that the Taiwan Relations Act provides a reliable and consistent foundation for Taiwan-U.S. interactions, contributing to the solidity of the bilateral relationship. He noted that U.S. support for Taiwan is firmly grounded in the act and the Six Assurances, providing stability.
The Taiwan Relations Act, according to Lai, represents the maintenance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, aligning with the expectations of both Taiwan and the U.S., as well as international interests.
Looking ahead, Lai plans to continue deepening the robust and close Taiwan-U.S. relationship based on Taiwan-friendly laws and accumulated goodwill. He reiterated his hope for continued U.S. support for a free and democratic Taiwan to maintain the current state of peace and prosperity.
