TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Former President Ma Ying-jeou met with Yin Li, Party Secretary of Beijing Municipality, in Beijing on Monday (April 8), emphasizing the importance of the 1992 Consensus. Ma believes it is the foundation for setting aside cross-strait disputes, establishing mutual trust, and creating a win-win situation.
During his tenure, Ma noted that 23 agreements were signed between the two sides, realizing the Three Links and direct flights between China and Taiwan, benefiting people on both sides of the strait.
Ma stressed that the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) has not been abolished even under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government, reflecting the practical needs of people across the strait in terms of economy and life. He expressed hope for continued exchanges, especially among young people.
Ma visited the Museum of the War of Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression near the Marco Polo Bridge, emphasizing that the Chinese must be self-reliant and strong to avoid being slaughtered.
Yin Li praised Ma for adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing Taiwan independence. He admired Ma's act of leading a group to the mainland to worship ancestors and visit during the Tomb-Sweeping Day period.
Ma and his entourage visited The Palace Museum in Beijing in the afternoon, accompanied by Song Tao, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
After the visit, Ma stated that any act of de-sinicization would not succeed because Chinese culture has a long history and is deeply rooted in the blood of the Chinese people.
