TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) announced Sunday (April 7) that it is currently coordinating the search for six people who have lost contact in the Shakadang Trail and Zhonghe Mine, including the wife and two children of a man surnamed Yu, a Singaporean couple holding Australian passports, and a man surnamed Hsiao who was reportedly near the mine at the time.
Following a major earthquake in Hualien, rescue operations continue on the Taroko Shakadang Trail. Large machinery moved along the riverbed on Sunday, excavating soil for subsequent machinery to enter.
The Hualien earthquake resulted in six missing, 13 dead, and 1,140 injured. Additionally, 38 people remain in the Tienhsiang area.
Rescue operations at Zhonghe Mine have dispatched large machinery and personnel, including three excavators, two police and fire personnel, and seven miners. However, due to environmental factors, by 1 p.m., the rescue team had only advanced about 100 meters, with approximately 1.5 kilometers remaining to the destination.
Rescue operations on the Shakadang Trail have confirmed that the Singaporean couple holding Australian passports disembarked nearby. By 2 p.m., three excavators and special search team members had been dispatched, with aerial assistance from a Turkish drone rescue team.
The CEOC pointed out that a barrier lake may have formed in the Shakadang Stream. After surveying and aerial photography, it was found that there are three collapses and two deep pools in the current key rescue area. The soil and rock in the pool area are obviously overflowing, but the water volume is very small, and it is judged that there will be no immediate danger.
The CEOC has notified on-site units that if heavy rain is encountered, the rescue team should evacuate first to protect their own safety and will continue to monitor the barrier lake.
