TAINAN (TVBS News) — Far East University announced on Monday (March 25) that it has passed a resolution to rename the institution as "CTBC Technology University" (中信科技大學) and will apply to the Ministry of Education for the name change this semester.
The announcement follows a donation of NT$ 100 million by the Chinatrust Commercial Bank Co., Ltd. (CTBC) to the university last Friday.
Far East University President Cheng Chin-che said the donation from CTBC Bank is an excellent opportunity for the university to become a model of innovative transformation in vocational and technical universities.
The decision will provide students with a better educational environment and learning opportunities, Cheng stated.
Cheng also said that Tainan already has the CTBC Business School and the CTBC International Academy, and the addition of CTBC Technology University in the future is expected to supplement the cultivation of vocational education talents.
A university staff pointed out that Far East University had nearly 10,000 students at its peak. However, the current student population has dropped to 2,200 due to the low birth rate, and the university has previously made several personnel adjustments among faculty and staff.
