TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A significant shift in weather patterns commences in Taiwan this Thursday (Feb 22), with rain is expected in the northeastern region and temperatures to become increasingly chilly late into the night, dropping to 15 degrees Celsius.

Due to a stagnant weather front in China's Huabei region, Taiwan, located near the front, is witnessing an accumulation of warm air as the southern winds strengthen. This has resulted in widespread high temperatures above 27 degrees Celsius during the daytime, reaching extremes of 36-37 degrees Celsius in the Southern Taiwan area of Kaohsiung and Pingtung.

The front system, expected to be over the northern part of the Strait in the morning, will gradually move across Taiwan.

By evening, the northeastern monsoon will begin to affect the region; hence, weather in northern and eastern regions will transition to brief spells of rain, and temperatures will drop, ranging between a high of 22-24 degrees and a low of 15-16 degree Celsius.

Central and southern Taiwan will experience less impact, with sunny to cloudy conditions. However, sporadic brief showers may occur during the daytime as the front crosses, but overall rainfall impact remains minimal with highs of 27-31 degrees and lows of 16-19 degrees Celsius.

From Friday through the weekend, the persistent influence of the northeastern monsoon will lead to brief rainfall in the wind-facing northern and eastern areas and sunny to cloudy weather in leeward central and southern regions.

Temperatures predict a high of 17-21 degrees, and a low of 14-15 degrees in the north and east; and a high of 25-29 degrees, and a low of 14-16 degrees in the central and south.

As another cold wave affects from Monday to Tuesday next week, alongside continued overcasts and rain in the north and east, temperatures will see a further decrease, with lows in northern urban areas possibly hitting 13-14 degrees Celsius.

The cold bout, comparable to mainland cold air masses, will not weaken until Wednesday.
