TAIPEI (TVBS News) — All eyes are on the approaching U.S. presidential elections, and as experts analyze the potential changes in global dynamics, former senior director for Asian affairs at the US White House's National Security Council (NSC) Evan Medeiros, delved even further into the issue with his paper, "The New Domestic Politics of U.S.-China Relations."
TVBS commentator Wenchi Yu discussed on Feb. 20 with the senior official, potential shifts in U.S. Congress toward China issues, as well as the possible motivations behind both major parties' attitudes.
"The fact that Congress is more interested in China and more active in China is due first and foremost to the fact that they see a greater number of threats and challenges emanating from China," he said.
"Their views of China, and the China challenge have changed and as a result, they went on to be more active."
However, Medeiros pointed out that a second underlying factor behind the proactive measures could be due to gaining broader congressional support for domestic agendas.
The senior fellow for Foreign Policy at the Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis also shared his views on the domestic policy shifts within China.
"For Xi Jinping, domestic affairs and foreign affairs are inextricably linked. You can't really divide them up," he said.
Medeiros indicated that Xi is now trying to “rewire and reconfigure the Chinese economy for that long-term competition with the United States.”
As the possibility of a second Trump administration looms, Medeiros suggests that Taiwan and other nations should focus on "resilience and diversification," to avoid being too dependent on one major player on the global stage.
