TAIPEI (TVBS News) — National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) is set to hold a college and department fair on Feb. 24, where its newly established Traditional Chinese Medicine department will make its debut, showcasing the integration of artificial intelligence and information technology in its curriculum.

The university, in a press release issued Tuesday (Feb. 20), explained that due to a lack of local traditional medicine research and teaching resources, Yang Ming University's College of Medicine established the Institute of Traditional Medicine in 1991.

Through years of accumulation in the field of traditional medicine, the university received the approval of the Ministry of Education last year to establish the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, utilizing Taipei Veterans General Hospital for practical training, cultivating "new traditional Chinese physicians" with interdisciplinary characteristics.

According to Associate Professor Lin Tung-yi, the new department will combine biotechnology, engineering, artificial intelligence, information technology, and technology management to cultivate new traditional Chinese physicians who can break through traditional models and possess diverse features.

At present, the majority of traditional Chinese physicians in the country mainly serve at the primary community level. The university believes hospitals, universities, governments, and industries urgently need traditional medical talents to drive teaching research and scientific research and development.

Accordingly, the new department will endeavor to cultivate traditional medical talents that can serve in hospital clinics, scientific research, and the biotech industry, enhancing Taiwan's development of the traditional Chinese medicine industry.

The university says the "new traditional Chinese physician" aims to invigorate large hospitals and the biotech industry and provide students with a broader academic vision and more development opportunities. It also plans to cultivate traditional Chinese physicians with a global vision and innovative thinking through interdisciplinary cooperation, thus promoting the development of medical technology.
