TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Han Kuo-yu, the newly-elected Speaker of the Legislative Yuan, is facing challenges after his election victory on Thursday (Feb. 1), as the idea of his possible impeachment has become a trending search item on Google.
There are currently no laws for the removal of the Legislative Yuan Speaker without consent from a third of the members proposing, and two-thirds agreeing to, the recall.
Han, a legislator-at-large, is per regulations immune from recall.
His election has attracted significant scrutiny, including a protest from pro-Taiwan groups outside the parliament on election day, which was swiftly addressed by law enforcement.
Despite mounting criticisms online, President-elect Lai Ching-te, who is also the chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), extended his congratulations to Han on his election. Lai expressed hope that different political parties can compete and cooperate to pass bills for the benefit of the public.
Newly-elected Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Chang Chia-Chun also commented on the trending search term "Legislative Yuan Speaker recall," stating the requirements required for impeachment, explaining it as a difficult feat to accomplish in reality.
