TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Han Kuo-yu of the Kuomintang (KMT) triumphed over You Si-kun of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the 11th Legislative Yuan speaker election on Thursday (Feb. 1). Han won with 54 votes against You's 51 votes.
In this competition for the roles of legislative speaker and deputy speaker, the KMT put forth Han Kuo-yu and Johnny Chiang, while the DPP bid for incumbent speaker You and deputy speaker Tsai Chi-chang. The Taiwan People's Party (TPP) fielded Huang Shan-shan for the position of legislative speaker.
The first round of voting ended with Han securing 54 votes, You 51, and Huang merely seven. One vote was deemed invalid due to a fingerprint smudge, and no candidate secured a majority, prompting a second round between Han and You.
As the second round of voting commenced, all eight TPP legislators were absent. The results mirrored the first round, announced Ker Chien-ming, the meeting chairman, at 1:30 p.m., inviting the newly-elected speaker to the stage.
Han's win confirmed him as the 11th Legislative Yuan Speaker. The deputy speaker election continued at 2:30 p.m.
