TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Following his defeat in a bid for the role of Legislative Yuan speaker Thursday (Feb. 1), You Si-kun of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) announced his resignation from legislative duties effective Feb. 2.
The vote for the new speaker and deputy speaker of the Taiwanese Legislature took place Thursday. Following two voting rounds, the Kuomintang's (KMT) Han Kuo-yu won the 11th Legislative Yuan speaker election, edging out You Si-kun by a slim margin of 54 votes to 51.
The election for the deputy speaker was held Thursday afternoon. The KMT nominated Johnny Chiang while the DPP rallied behind the incumbent deputy speaker, Tsai Chi-chang.
You Si-kun's resignation comes as a blow to DPP, adding an extra layer of challenge to the already heated competition for the deputy speaker role.
