TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Minister of Transportation and Communications, Wang Kuo-tsai, expressed regret on Wednesday (Jan. 31) after the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) unilaterally adjusted flight routes, leading to potential aviation safety concerns.

On Tuesday, the CAAC announced the cancellation of the "offset measure" for the southbound operation of the M503 flight route starting Feb. 1. The authority also declared the initiation of east to west operation of routes W122 and W123, located near Taiwan, without bilateral negotiations, prompting Wang's response.

Wang highlighted that the decision could result in potential conflicts between civilian flights and military aircraft, posing an aviation safety risk. He noted that Route M503's proximity to the Taipei Flight Information Region, with the nearest point just 4.2 nautical miles away, amplifies the risk.

Wang also raised concerns about the safety of take-offs and landings in Matsu and Kinmen due to the lack of prior consultation.

Wang stressed the severity of the situation, stating that it is now under the attention of national security units. Consultations with the Civil Aviation Administration and the military are underway to develop appropriate responses.
