Taiwan reinstates 1-year mandatory military service

TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taiwan has reinstated compulsory military service, with the first batch of one-year conscripts reporting for duty at Chenggong Ling military training camp in Taichung on Thursday (Jan. 25). 

Media were invited to cover the induction process, including basic training and shaving recruits' heads. 

 

The Army Command Headquarters plans to train 670 individuals in this batch, outlining an extensive program comprising basic, station, specialized, and military base training and joint exercises.

Lien Chih-wei, head of the military training department, highlighted the improved conditions for conscripts, including a substantial monthly stipend increase, health, military insurance, and meal allowances. 

Yin Hsin-shih, a conscript, shared his initial apprehensions and subsequent relief after finding the training center less intimidating than anticipated. 
 

Embracing his role, Yin stated his readiness to fulfill his duty as a citizen of the Republic of China, Taiwan.
