LOS ANGELES (TVBS News) — The 96th Academy Awards nominations were unveiled on Tuesday (Jan. 23). Notably, the work of Taiwanese American director S. Leo Chiang, titled "Island in Between," has garnered attention by securing a spot in the category of Best Documentary Short Film.
Chiang's work skillfully captures the everyday life on the Kinmen Islands while offering an outsider's perspective on the local lifestyle. Through the lens of his father's military service memories on the islands, the documentary explores the intricate relationship between Taiwan, Kinmen, and China from various angles.
Chiang, who was born in Taiwan and raised in the U.S., previously collaborated with documentary filmmakers in China. Regarding his latest film, he expressed his intent to delve deep into the Taiwan Strait crisis. He aims to provide a unique perspective by sharing the experiences of the people living in the region, including his viewpoint, contributing to the ongoing discussion.
Competing alongside "Island in Between" for the Best Documentary Short category are films such as "The Last Repair Shop," "Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó," "The ABCs of Book Banning," and "The Barber of Little Rock."
The winners of the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on March 10.
